Built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The term "taj mahal" is actually a derivative of her name. Construction of the massive white marble structure began in 1632 and lasted for approximately 20 years. It is known for its symmetry and decorative pietra dura. The term pietra dura refers to a historical term for describing the technique of using small, exquisitely cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create a painting in stone. The stonework was assembled loosely and is then glued stone-by-stone to a substrate. The contact between each section is practically invisible. The stones were grooved on the undersides so that they interlocked. This puzzle-like construction provided stability. The design was then encircled by a "frame" that held it all in place. Many different stones were used in pietra dura including marbles, semiprecious and precious stones. Made in Italy and part of the Duet in Gold & Silver Collection.
